Colour Study (Flinders St East #2)
2020, Oil on paper, collage, 14 x 31.5cm (image), 35 x 52.5cm (frame).
Neil Binnie’s practice is largely centred on geometric abstraction and responses to design elements. The artist employs photography, screen-printing, painting and studies on paper to respond to (Townsville’s) built environments and the intersection of forms and planes.
This work was exhibited in Neil Binnie's solo exhibition, Urban Construct, at Umbrella from June to August of 2020. The exhibition investigated the visualisation of space as lived experience within Townsville’s evolving urban landscape. Traversing the city as a pedestrian allows for a sensory and spatial experience. It encourages listening to the sounds of human activity, observing colour and perceiving changes of light and shade on built geometric objects over time. In parallel to developing ways to visualise this space, the exhibition explored spatial theory in varying contexts of urban reality, conceptual representations and lived experience.
