Susan Peters NampitjinSturt Street (Claypans), created for The Umbrella Print Commission.

The Umbrella Print Commission is an opportunity for audiences to purchase stellar work by celebrated artists at an entry-level price point by becoming a member. This offer draws upon the success of Umbrella's artists and its printmaking community at large. The commission features acclaimed artists and members Jill O'Sullivan, Susan Peters Nampitjin and Vincent Bray. In 2020 they each editioned 30 new prints to be purchased individually or as a bundle. The artist proof of each edition will also be held as part of Umbrella's print collection.

Umbrella’s inaugural Print Commission was made possible through the generous support of Ron McBurnie of Monsoon Publishing.

Susan Peters Nampitjin's paintings, prints and latest innovative textile works often explore her reflections on Country and landscapes. This work was featured in Susan's latest exhibitiion TungkurlThe titular term 'Tungkurl' refers to the hair string which is used to wrap 'Warntu', a traditional Jalngu grass receptacle that stores foods such as nuts and bush fruits. The grass is bunched together and smashed into a mat, then rolled with the nuts and fruits inside and tied with wool.

Susan is a contemporary artist of the Walmajarri people (Tanami desert of South East Kimberleys, Western Australia) who currently lives in Gurambilbarra/Townsville. She comes from a family of painters. Her Indigenous culture is often reflected in contemporaneous pictorials of bush plants, foods, medicine and native ecology. Through her wider art practice she experiments with a range of art media and traditions ranging from painting to printmaking.

Over the last couple of years Susan has been working with hessian and ochre (moving away from canvas). In 2021, she won the CIAF Award for Innovation for this new development in her practice. Susan's work has been purchased by Artbank Sydney, National Gallery of Australia Canberra, Perc Tucker Gallery Townsville and Townsville Hospital.
