Winter Trees #7
Photographic print on Canson archival paper, 2015, 25.4cm x 25.4cm.
Ann Vardanega's latest exhibition A Sense of Place explores the simplicity of lines in the landscape and the intersection between natural beauty and industrial landscape. Vardanega immerses herself in the landscape, and particularly enjoys photographing stark and sparse environments, in contrast to the dense bush and heavy greenery of far North Queensland.
On travelling to Japan the artist observed how the landscape, when shrouded by snow, transforms. This began an obsession with photographing this snow-covered landscape. Subsequent trips resulted in a growing portfolio of images. The artist has been searching for a similar simplicity in North Queensland by exploring her infra-red photography.
A Sense of Place was on display at Umbrella from 3 November to 17 December 2023.
Dr Ann Vardanega describes herself as an artist, educator and academic. She has over thirty years of exhibition and commercial photography experience. She completed her PhD in Creative Arts with James Cook University in 2020. Her interest in the built and natural landscapes began with her Honours exhibition in 2011. That interest is ongoing. At the same time, her creative portraiture attempts to give creative control back to the subject. Ann has exhibited in Womindjeka/Melbourne, Cadi/Sydney, Gurambilbarra/Townsville, Gimuy/Cairns, Italy, the USA and China.
