Shirley Anne Dawson grew up in Dajarra & Mt Isa QLD, of the Eastern Arrente language group and Huckitta, Harts Range N.T area, and now resides in Townsville. Shirley's artistic interest commenced in 1973 during primary school with sketching and then acrylic painting on canvas. She expanded her practice, incorporating her artworks onto ceramic pieces and using bush plants to dye material before applying her artwork designs onto women's clothing.
Shirley completed a course on all aspects of airbrushing in 1985 through the Flying Arts School. She started a small arts and ceramic business in 1988 with a loan through the Aboriginal Development Commission. After this, she gained a certificate qualification in teaching in ceramics. Shirley has won several 1st, 2nd and highly commended prizes for her art and ceramic pieces at the Mt Isa Annual Art show during the 1980's & 1990's.
